WHAT IS A KINESIOLOGIST?

Kinesiology is the study of human movement as it relates to the aging process and disease. Kinesiologists are specialists in human movement, exercise prescription and exercise for all populations or individuals with an injury or illness. Kinesiologists are required to complete a four year bachelor’s degree program and be registered with the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK).

WHAT CAN A KINESIOLOGIST HELP WITH?

Kinesiologists are very knowledgeable about the recommended forms of exercise for each unique population group. Their knowledge of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and disease and aging allows them to create safe and effective exercise programs for special populations that might have medical limitations or concerns. Including elderly populations, individuals with diabetes, heart conditions or any other illness that would prevent them from exercising.

If you are recovering from an injury, a kinesiologist can help continue your rehabilitation through an individualized exercise program to increase strength, flexibility and mobility in a safe and effective manner to prevent reinjury and continue recovery.

Kinesiologists can help people who are new to exercising, want to improve their posture, are planning a surgery, want to improve general fitness and health, or are professional athletes trying to maximize performance.

WHAT WILL A SESSION LOOK LIKE?

During your first session your kinesiologist will discuss your medical history and goals with you. To measure your range of motion, flexibility, muscular strength, and movement patterns, they will then do a function movement examination. To assist you in reaching your goals, each session will incorporate mobility and flexibility exercises as well as workouts for building strength and endurance. Please bring water and athletic clothes to each session.
